When the door closes
and the latch slides into the strike,
the apartment instantly cocoons;
a fortress. a haven. Home.

The muscles unclench,
and the churning gut relaxes;
the outside world fades into unreality,
a chimera vanquished.

Tomorrow is another battle
out the door. But for tonight,
ensconced within, swaddled in familiarity,
I am safe.
