I was drawn to Fort Ord for the sand dunes but fell for the buildings. They’re not pretty or clean. Nor do they in any way resemble the orderliness of an army barracks. Abandoned, they are what one can expect of long-empty structures: derelict, decaying, boarded. I felt an unexpected pull to these buildings, however, and the hauntingly desolate atmosphere which cloaks them – aged sentinels who still stand at attention, weathered and peeling.
