Borrowed Time

Verdant grass droops brown.
Giant mountains slide to mounds.
Earth spins round and round.

Clouds gather swiftly –
pouring rain, biting winds –

Butterfly

In the garden’s shade
on a commonplace leaf, a
wondrous butterfly,
whose delicate wings yet sends
it fluttering through the air!

Half-Light

Twilight falls slowly:
shadows lengthening on leaves,
green fading to night.

Soon after the rain

Fog conceals briefly
naked trees, empty branches –
then cold sun rises.

Resetting the Dial

In line we jostle
in green-eyed hustle,
striving for the next rung –
a discontented crowd
with feelings stored in a cloud.

Is this life?
This constant strife?
No!
Let’s step down
onto solid ground.

And sit awhile,
resetting the dial
to another space –
a peaceful penury
all the richer if you’re with me.
