Ivory keys fall
in mournful chords, notes dancing
like rain on pavement.

In line we jostle
in green-eyed hustle,
striving for the next rung –
a discontented crowd
with feelings stored in a cloud.
Is this life?
This constant strife?
No!
Let’s step down
onto solid ground.
And sit awhile,
resetting the dial
to another space –
a peaceful penury
all the richer if you’re with me.

and all hide under shadows,
but the wrought iron
instead reveals its facets
in intricate defiance.

Sun rose gloriously,
coloring the world vivid,
but, setting, deprived
sky and sea a brilliance – light
singly tied to future’s rise.

The weathered bench sits
empty in a garden crowd,
drawing only shadows.

My mirror lies constantly;
who’s that lady reflected?
That’s not me!
With the gray strands
and the oval face
more my mom’s than mine.
Yes, my mirror lies
for in amber light,
I see the me I remember.

Sometimes footsteps echo along
the stretch of road in somber song
and, when faded, is all the more profound
for soon the sound in other noises drowns.
But for a few, with ears attuned, the cadence
still rings and so today bow in obeisance.
