E – Earth, Is That You?

Devil's Golf Course, Death Valley NP

I love deserts. The sand dunes and cactus. Searing heat and the maybe mirages. I dare not visit in the summer, when boiling is balmy, but reserve my sojourns in the winter where the bitter cold is blunted by a brisk climb. Oh, the reward of such a hike upon sitting atop an outcrop! A hundred square miles of Martian terrain revealed while gobbling a chocolate chip cookie. My visits are short, unfortunately. But just enough. A little getaway to another world far removed.

Even in Paradise - Two Haikus

Escape? No, friend. Rain
falls even in paradise –
while the sun’s shining!

Ah, but the rainbow!
Rain and sun; light and dark – Life.
Bring your umbrella.

E - Escape, a haibun (attempt)

***WARNING: the poem touches on a grave subject and is in no way meant to make light of it; in fact, it is meant to shed light on the violence many still battle against.***

Eve fights to escape from under the oppressive weight which lands atop her. A fortuitous connection of knee to flesh, and she’s free.

Eve escapes
clutching only blankets
in her hands.
