When the Door Closes

My secret life as a poet, writer, photographer…

life

Sometimes life, in shadows, blooms
while sunlight entombs,
and envy blinds the one
who wishes only for the sun,
for brightness holds no monopoly
over a life lived joyfully.
So, take the sun with the clouds
lest you be by the day cowed.

Once, I thought the desert barren,
a lifeless, stagnant place
of no particular beauty or worth,
but as the years roll by,
and I, too, approach a desert
solely mine,
I find, to my delight, an oasis
of bittersweet contradictions:
life in constant motion,
whose sandy floor bears footprints
just as easily erased
as they were stamped on my soul
by eager visitors.

L – Lost and Found

For years, I roamed,
chasing an unknown
to fill a mysterious hole
in my hungry soul
but when I stilled
and let the silence build,
I realized my mistake.
For goodness’s sake,
it was always there,
inside, and if I dared,
I would have seen
what’s always been:
fields of flowers
nurtured by manure.

**It sounds a little depressing at the end, but it’s meant to be the opposite – an example of life’s yin yang.**

Water Flowing Over Rocks

Crystal clear waters
blur when flowing over rocks.
Clarity downstream.

D- Dew on Calla Lily

Drops rest on petals
washed by early morning rain.
All too soon sun-dried.

B – Besting the Big Bad Wolf

Weathered

The wind howled last night,
huffing and puffing
against my clapboard house.
The moon rose
to its fevered pitch and
still the wind paced outside.
I lay cuddled in my bed
all the while, secure.
I’d framed my home
with concrete and steel,
you see, the facade of wood
an afterthought.
And though he tried,
he failed,
and my house stood squat
while I lived inside.

Where Will You Be Tomorrow?

        Where will you be tomorrow?
        When the clap clap clap
of the train on the track
        dwindles
        into monotony
        and the exciting bend
        beyond the horizon
        comes and goes
        will you sit still
        in the same seat
        or move to the next
        car and lean out
        the open window,
        smiling
as the bugs hit your teeth?

Today is unlike
yesterday and tomorrow.
Ephemeral.

Forth I Go Whither I Walk

Today, in sunlight,
I stand just beyond the path;
but for a locked gate,
onwards I’d have run!…and yet…
forth I go whither I walk.
